Round Robin and Interlaboratory Study
The newly emerging field of plastic photovoltaics (PVs) is still lacking behind in terms of standard procedures for product testing and performance validation. Thus, custom procedures are often used to evaluate the device performance, which result in great variation of the reported data.
The best tools for harmonizing the testing procedures and establishing an agreement on device performance are the round robin (RR) and interlaboratory studies (ILS). Such tools not only allow identifying variations in testing procedures, but also generate data, which can aid in establishing standard protocols.
The main principle of RR and ILS is shearing and testing sample devices among different groups / laboratories and inter-comparing the measured parameters. The diagram below presents the mechanisms of RR and ILS. The principle of RR is that the specimen travels among and is being measured by all parties allowing the direct comparison of the results among all the parties. In the case of ILS the specimen travels only between one party and the laboratory of origin (often this process is performed simultaneously with a number of parties by sending similar type of devices to each). The advantage of the later is that it is less time consuming compared to RR.
